    A long-chain dialkylated olefin, 2C18 was found to form a close-packed, highly insulating self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on Si(111) via Si–C bond formation. The IR absorption spectra of the 2C18-SAM show that the alkyl chains are densely packed with an all-trans conformation. The threshold voltage to initiate the scanned probe oxidation (SPO) of the 2C18-SAM-covered Si(111) was ca. 9 V, which is much higher than the previously reported voltages for organic monolayers on Si or SiO2/Si substrates.

    It is possible to perform microencapsulation of a bioactive substance having a solid form at ordinary temperature in a predetermined wall thickness and particle size without the need of dissolving the solid biologically active substance in any solvent by a method for producing a microcapsule, comprising: heating an aqueous dispersion comprising a dispersion stabilizer, an ionic surfactant, the solid biologically active substance, a polymerization initiator and a radical-polymerizable monomer subjected to ultrasonic irradiation. Therefore, the method enables to design a desired particle readily and it is useful for the microencapsulation.

    Structurally isomeric poly(alkyl ethylenes) with H and Y structures, polymeric bridging segments and a &PSgr; index of 2×10 −3 to 8×10 −3 (kJ/mole/degree), have decreased instability in the melt and more advantageous processing properties. The structurally isomeric poly(alkyl ethylenes) with H and Y structures are synthesized by an irradiating method, a melt reaction method or a solid phase reaction method by reacting poly(alkyl ethylenes) with 0.05 to 5% by weight of monofunctional, difunctional and polyfunctional monomers, optionally in the presence of peroxides. The structurally isomeric poly(alkyl ethylenes) are suitable for producing films, sheets, panels, coatings, pipes, hollow objects and foams.

    A responsive microgel is provided which responds volumetrically and reversibly to a change in one or more aqueous conditions selected from the group consisting of (temperature, pH, and ionic conditions) comprised of an ionizable network of covalently cross-linked homopolymeric ionizable monomers wherein the ionizable network is covalently attached to an amphiphilic copolymer to form a plurality of ‘dangling chains’ and wherein the ‘dangling chains’ of amphiphilic copolymer form immobile micelle-like aggregates in aqueous solution. A responsive microgel is further provided that comprises at least one therapeutic entity and delivers a substantially linear and sustained release of the therapeutic entity under physiological conditions.
