The emission and direct excitation spectra of XeH (D) and Xe2H(D) were observed after photolysis of H2 (D2) in an argon matrix doped with xenon and hydrogen (deuterium). The emission bands are typical bound free transitions whereas the excitation spectra show pronounced vibrational progressions. With the help of the isotope effect (hydrogen and deuterium) it was possible to determine the vibrational
