  A process for preparing compounds of the formula wherein R, Y and A are organic residues and i is 0, 1, 2 or 3, which process comprises reacting a ketone compound of the formula wherein and Ar is an organic residue, with an organometallic reagent; and subsequently dehydrating, oxidising and reacting to remove the group Ar and further reacting to obtain the desired products. The resulting silacyclohexane-based compound are useful in liquid crystal displays.
