    Cobalt(II) complexes of 2-methanol-, 2,6-dimethanol- and 2-ethanolpyridines have been prepared by the reaction of the corresponding protonated substituted pyridines with [Co(sac)(2)(H2O)(4)](.)2H(2)O, where sac is saccharinate, and characterised by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, magnetic measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The corresponding 2-methanolpyridine (mpy) complex [Co-2(mu-Cl)(2)(mpy)(4)]Cl(2)(.)2H(2)O is dimeric with chloro bridges and each cobalt(II) ion has an octahedral coordination with two chloro and two bidentate (N, O) ligands. In the 2,6-dimethanolpyridine (dmpy) complex [Co(dmpy)(2)]Cl-2, dmpy exhibits a tripodal chelating coordination mode through the N and two hydroxyl O atoms forming a CoN2O4 chromophore. The protonated 2-ethanolpyridinium cation Hpyet serves as a non-coordinating, but hydrogen bonded counter ion in [Co(Cl)(4)](Hpyet)(2).     Device structure 100 for iontophoresis provides electrode 101 and electrically conductive layer 102. Electrically conductive layer 102 contains active ingredient D and basic water swelling methacrylate copolymer P1 and/or acidic water swelling methacrylate copolymer P2. Electrode 101 and electrically conductive layer 102 are placed into a hollow of backing 103 and electrode terminal 104 is connected to electrode 101 through backing 103. Adhesive layer 105 is set around backing 103, and liner 106 to be removed when using the device, is placed so as to cover the hollow of backing 103.

    The present invention provides an iontophoresis device allowing effective and continuous absorption for a long period. The iontophoresis device comprises the first electrode structure (100a) and the second electrode structure (110a) each having a hydrophilic conductive layer (102a, 112a) containing active ingredient and an electrode member (101a, 111a), and a power supply (120a) having polarity inverting means for switching over a current direction between the two electrode structures, wherein at least one of the first and the second electrode structures contains chloride ions and before administration, a chloride-ion content (P mg) is within a range satisfying the following equation:1.0 × (I × T × 0.022) ≤ P    wherein T represents a polarity inverting time (min) until polarity is inverted after energization in a certain direction and I represents an average current (mA).
