  A concise asymmetric synthesis of (-)-hongconin and (-)-1-epi-hongconin is described. The synthesis features an efficient combination of Dotz benzannulation or lactaldehyde arylation and the oxa-Pictet-Spengler reaction as the key steps. The synthesis is completed in 10-11 steps from the chiral pool material (R)-methyl lactate.
