Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Bis(salicylideneaminato)copper(II) Complex in Pyridine and Formation of 2-Cyanophenolato Complex

The copper(II) complex of salicylideneamine (salamH) reacts with molecular oxygen in pyridine to give the 2-cyanophenolato complex, [Cu(2-CNphO)2(py)2], in good yield, where 2-CNphOH and py denote 2-cyanophenol and pyridine, respectively. This complex was characterized by the infrared and electronic spectra and by its magnetic susceptibilities, and was compared with the authentic complex, [Cu(2-CNphO)2(py)2]
