The development of an enantioselective sulfideoxidation involving a chiral iron catalyst and aqueous hydrogen peroxide as oxidant is described. A chiral 1,3-diol with a benzyl backbone has been used for the asymmetricoxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. Moderate to good yields and enantioselectivity (upto 87% ee) have been observed.

Contained chirality: Novel binaphthyl-based chiralhypervalentiodine(III) reagents are presented with the chirality contained only in the ligand. These have been characterized by X-ray analysis, and all derivatives show the prominent reactivities of hypervalentiodine reagents. Due to their limited stability in solution, they are inefficient chiraliodine(III) derivatives.
