    The present invention relates a process for the production of polyurethanes wherein a tertiary amine functionality is incorporated into the side chain of a diaminobenzoate, to form a non-fugitive catalyst polyurethane chain extender. These non-fugitive chain extenders are polyurethane catalysts that provide adequate cure without residual odor and safety hazards associated with the more traditional tertiary amine catalysts. When reacted with the isocyanate reactive group the non-tertiary amine portion of the chain extender is bound to the polymeric network. Diffusion of the catalyst species from the polyurethane has been prevented, thus negating odor and toxicity as a problem. The diaminobenzoate provides enhanced polyurethane physical properties.

    Aqueous coating compositions comprising film forming resin bearing reactive functionality and blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent which is at least partially solubilized with organic acid and which is stable at room temperature in the presence of said functinality, but reactive therewith at elevated temperatures. The blocked isocyanate is prepared by (A) reacting (i) organic diisocyanate bearing one isocyanate group which is more reactive than the other and (ii) sufficient active hydrogen containing blocking agent to react with substantially all of said more reactive isocyanate groups; and (B) reacting hydroxy functional amine bearing at least two hydroxyl groups and at least one tertiary amine nitrogen with sufficient reaction product (A) to react substantially all free or unblocked isocyanate groups of reaction product (A) with hydroxyl groups of said amine. Alternatively, the blocked isocyanate is prepared by (A) reacting an excess of organic diisocyanate with dihydroxy functional amine containing at least one tertiary nitrogen to form a isocyanate terminated tertiary amine containing intermediate; and (B) reacting the intermediate of (A) with sufficient active hydrogen containing blocking agent to react with substantially all of the terminal isocyanate groups of the intermediate.

    The present invention relates to polyurethanes and a method for making polyurethanes by reacting an organic diisocyanate, a glycol having a molecular weight of 500-5000 and a derivative of 2,6-diaminobenzoic acid or a blend comprising derivatives of 2,4-diaminobenzoic acid and 2,6-diaminobenzoic acid. The addition of the 2,6-diaminobenzoic acid derivative to the composition improves polyurethane processability and performance by decreasing chain extender reactivity and increasing hard segment regularity.

    Aromatic polyamides are produced by subjecting an aromatic diisocyanate and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid to polycondensation in the presence of an alkali metal compound and/or an alkaline earth metal compound as a catalyst in an aprotonic polar solvent. The aromatic polyamide can be rendered suitable for use in the production of high-tenacity fibers by charging in advance the solvent, aromatic dicarboxylic acid and catalyst in a mixing system, reducing the water content in the mixing system to 50 ppm or below and then introducing the aromatic diisocyanate to conduct the polycondensation reaction.
