p-(dimethylamino)benzenesulfonate (ASE) was found to promptly rearrange to the corresponding quaternary zwitterion (AZWI) in a smectic, liquidcrystallinesolvent (OS 35) 4-pentylcyclohexyl 4-propylcyclohexanecarboxylate.
