  • A Two-Dimensional Zinc(II)–Schiff Base Coordination Polymer Formed by Six-Membered Metallacyclic Repeating Motif: Structural Aspects, Thermal and Photophysical Properties

    A dicyanoamide-bridged 2D polynuclear zinc(II) complex having formula [Zn2(L)(μ-dca-κN1κN5)2]n, 1 has been synthesized using the Schiff base ligand N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-diaminopentane, (H2L) and sodium dicyanoamide [Na(dca)]. The complex presents a 2D hexagonal structure formed by 1,5-dca singly bridged helical chains connected through double 1,5-dca bridges. The ligand and the complex are well characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV–vis spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis is performed to investigate the thermal stability of the metal–organic framework. Photoluminescence studies of the Schiff base ligand in methanol and of the zinc(II) complex 1 in solid state show the presence of blue emission. The emission of the ligand occurs from an excited state involving an intramolecular proton-transfer process as a result of keto–enol tautomerisation and the zinc(II) complex emits from a ligand-centered excited state.

    The oxalate-bridged Schiff-based complex [Fe-III(salapn)](2)(C2O4)} (1) has been synthesized and characterized structurally (salapn = N,N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-1,3-diaminopentane dianion).     A dicyanamide bridged 2D polynuclear complex of copper(II) having molecular formula [Cu-2(L) (mu(1,5)-dca)(2)](n) (1) has been synthesized using the Schiff base ligand N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-diaminopentane, (H2L) and sodium dicyanamide (dca). The complex presents a 2D hexagonal structure formed by 1,5-dca singly bridged helical chains connected through double 1,5-dca bridges. The chelating characteristics of the H2L Schiff base ligand results in the formation of copper(II) dimer with a double phenoxo bridge presenting a very strong antiferromagnetic coupling in the copper(II) derivative (1) (J = -510 cm(-1)). The dimeric asymmetric unit of 1 is very similar to the active site of the catechol oxidase and, as expected, also presents catalytic activity for the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol to 3,5-ditert-butylquinone in presence of O-2, as demonstrated by kinetic studies of this oxidation reaction monitored by absorption spectroscopy resulting in high turnover number (K-cat = 259 h(-1)).     In the title compound, 2,2'-[1,3-pentanediyl-bis(nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenolato}copper(II)-ethanol (2/1), 2[Cu(C19H20N2O2)].C2H6O, the Cu atom is coordinated by an N2O2 donor set from the imine-phenol ligand in a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry, with the two phenol O atoms being deprotonated. There are two 'unsolvated' copper complexes and two ethanol-solvated copper complexes in the triclinic unit cell. The Cu-O and Cu-N distances are 1.891(4)-1.897(4) and 1.943(5)-1.978(5) Angstrom, respectively. The angle between the two coordination planes defined by the ligating atoms of one complex (O11, O12, N11 and N12) and those of the other independent complex (O21, O22, N21 and N22) is 49.4(2)degrees.
