indicate that the high-valent manganese/phosphine oxide system does not bind dioxygen, which agrees with our own observations. However, this system bears no relation to our authentic haemanalogues, Mn(PR3)X2; some properties of the latter in reversibly binding dioxygen and carbon monoxide are described in this communication.

The MnX2(PR3), (X = Cl, Br, I; R3= Prn3, Bun3, PhMe2, PhEt2) complexes bind nitricoxide to form MnX2(PR3)(NO) in the SolidState and in tetrahydrofuran; the reaction is reversible, and the affinity for NO is both halide and phosphine dependent.
