    A (preferably nonaqueous) method of making a dipyrromethane is described. The comprises the steps of: (a) providing a reaction system consisting essentially of an aldehyde or acetal, excess pyrrole and a catalyst; (b) reacting the aldehyde or acetal with the pyrrole in the reaction system to form the dipyrromethane therein; (c) quenching the reaction system by adding a base thereto (preferably without simultaneously or concurrently adding water and/or an organic solvent thereto); (d) separating the catalyst from the reaction system; and then (e) separating the pyrrole from the reaction system to produce the dipyrromethane as a residual

    Meso and β-substituted free base and zinc metallated thiazolidinone–porphyrin conjugates were synthesized by one pot four component Knoevenagel condensation by utilizing substituted amines, carbon disulfide, ethyl chloroacetate and porphyrin aldehydes.

    Zn-Zn porphyrin dimers have been incorporated into thin dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to boost their light harvesting efficiency. The photoexcited dimers show efficient and fast electron injection into TiO2 indicating that both photoexcited chromophores contribute to current generation. The improved light harvesting ability coupled to enhanced DSSC performance demonstrates the potential of 3-D tight harvesting arrays as next generation light harvesters for artificial solar energy conversion systems.
