    A series of potential DNA-binding antitumor agents, 2-[omega-(alkylamino) alkyl]-6-[omega-(alkylamino) alkyl] amino}-1H-benzo[de] isoquinolin-1,3(2H)-diones and 1,7-bis6-[(omega-(dimethylamino) alkyl) amino]-1,3dioxo-1H-benzo[de] isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl}-4-methyl-4-azaheptanes, have been prepared as mitonafide derivatives. Their DNA-binding ability and cytotoxic activity have been evaluated. Some of the target compounds have shown high DNA affinity as well as relevant cytotoxic properties. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd.     Fluorescence of 1a and 1b is 'switched on' by the quenching transition metal ions and the extent of fluorescence enhancement is found to be considerably higher than that expected on the basis of photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer in the systems. The observation has been rationalised taking into account the hydrated nature of the transition metal salts and preferential solvation of the fluorophore by the water molecules.     The pH-dependent fluorescence behavior of two regioisomeric 'receptor(1)-spacer(1)-fluorophore-spacer(2)-receptor(2)' systems 1 and 2 in micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate show that photoinduced electron transfer (PET) only occurs from the amine group connected to the 4-amino position of the aminonaphthalimide fluorophore in both cases. This demonstrates the directing influence of the photogenerated electric field within the aminonaphthalimide excited state on the electron transfer process. Since path-selectivity of PET is also known within the membrane-bound photosynthetic reaction center in bacteria, its origins may be illuminated by the simple experiments described here.     A method of inhibiting carbonate scale in an industrial water system includes the steps of dosing the industrial water system with a water treatment polymer comprising at least 60 mol % of carboxylic acid monomer and a quaternized naphthalimide fluorescent monomer as disclosed herein, and then monitoring the fluorescence of the water system. If both maleic acid and phosphino moieties are included in the water treatment polymer, then the maleic acid is present as no greater than 70 mol % of the water treatment polymer. If the polymer contains a sulfonic acid monomer, the polymer is a fluorescence efficient polymer.
