The reaction between the chiral allenic acid (+)-(S)-1 and the carbodiimides 2a–d and the keten-imine 6 gives, under mild conditions, the tricyclic compounds 3–5, 7, and 8. Low diastereoselectivity and a partial loss of opticalactivity are observed. A stepwise mechanistic pathway via a biradical intermediate is postulated.

This work discloses an electrochemical oxidative cross-coupling of amines with aryl and aliphatic isocyanides. In an undivided cell, the reaction proceeds without involving any transition-metal catalyst, oxidant, or toxic reagents providing carbodiimides in good yields, thereby circumventing stoichiometric chemical oxidants, with H2 as the only byproduct. course on the type and site of substitution was found. Among the several light-induced transformations, a novel rearrangement, i.e.11 to 9 (Scheme 3) was identified. The formation of the polycyclic compound 13 on irradiation of 8a (Scheme 3) resulted from an unexpected skeletal rearrangement with dearomatization of one benzene ring. The structures of compounds 10, 11, and 13 were established by X-ray
