  Aromatic nitroso compounds and diphenyl ketene yield 1:1-adducts or compounds derived therefrom. The direction of this addition is dependent upon the substituent of the nitroso compound: strongly electron-donating groups (p-methoxy or p-dimethylamino-) favour the direction of addition, which would be expected for a polar reaction. In all other cases, the addition proceeds in the reverse sense.
