    The transformation of remeramycin M (1m) into renieramycin J (1j) and jorumycin (2) is presented along with the results of antiproliferative assay data. The chemical stability and the oxidative degradation of 2 and renieramycm E (1e) to generate simple isoquinoline alkaloids, such as mimosamycin (7), renierol acetate (12), and renierone (8) are also described.     Three isoquinolinequinone antimicrobial metabolites, renierone (3), 7-methoxy-1, 6-dimethyl-5, 8-dihydroisoquinoline-5, 8-dione (4) and N-formyl-1, 2-dihydrorenierone (6), isolated from a marine sponge (Reniera sp.), were synthesized.

    The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of 30 isoquinoline quinones and 6 quinoline quinones are reported. The assignment of chemical shifts for the carbon atoms was achieved with the aid of two- and three-bond spin-spin couplings between 13C and protons.

    The total synthesis of renierone, mimocin, renierol, renierol acetate, renierol propionate, and 7-methoxy-1,6-dimethylisoquinoline-5,8-dione was successfully achieved by the regioselective oxidation of 5-oxygenated isoquinoline. The synthetic method of the 5-oxygenated isoquinoline is based on the thermal electrocyclic reaction of 1-azahexatriene system involving the benzene 1,2-bond.

    New total syntheses of renierol (3), renierol acetate (4), and renierol propionate (5) were completed by the synthesis of 5-oxygenated isoquinoline (6) based on the thermal electrocyclic reaction of the 1-azahexatriene system followed by regioselective oxidations of 5-hydroxyisoquinolines (6).
