Nitroolefins are conveniently prepared in high yields by nitration of olefins under an atmospheric pressure of nitric oxide at room temperature and subsequent treatment with acidic alumina.

α,β-Unsaturated nitroalkenes were synthesized in 54â99% yields by sonication of a chloroform solution containing the corresponding alkenes, NaNO2(10 equiv.), Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6(2.0 equiv.), and acetic acid (12 equiv.) in a sealed tube at 25â73 °C.
when 4-methyl-5-ethenylthiazole is used as arylalkene the starting material is converted to a pyrrole analogous of thianthrene. On the contrary, when 1,1-diphenylethylene is used, the main product observed is benzophenone. Nitrones are obtained only as minor products.
