    Total synthesis and structure–activity relationships of new echinocandin-like antifungal cyclolipohexapeptides

    A series of new echinocandin-like cyclolipohexapeptides were designed and total synthesized via solution phase [3 + 3]-segment coupling strategy with an attempt to improve antifungal activity. The designed compounds showed potent antifungal activities with broad spectrum. In particular, 11 compounds (i.e. 28a-e, 28g, 28i-j, 29a, 29c and 29e) showed better in vitro antifungal activities against Candida albicans or Aspergillus fumigatus than caspofungin. Moreover, the synthesized compounds provided new SAR information for the echinocandins. The findings in this work suggested that the "left" tripeptide segment of cyclolipohexapeptide scaffold might be a hydrophilic structural motif, whereas the "right" lipopeptide segment was preferred as a hydrophobic core. The amino acid component of the cyclolipohexapeptide scaffold could significantly affect the SAR of the side chains. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

    Synthesis and Physico-Chemical Properties of Polar Liquid Crystal Materials Incorporating a Coumarin Skeleton at the Terminal Position

    This paper described the synthesis and physico-chemical properties of homologous series of 2-oxo-2H-chromen-6-yl 6-alkoxy-naphthalene-2-carboxylate (compounds 1-n). Compounds 1-n show a monotropic nematic (N) phase, where the average of the N-isotropic (1) phase transition temperatures is ca. 140 degrees C. The mesomorphic properties were also examined by binary phase diagrams for the mixture of 1-n (n = 4 or 8) and 4-(cyano-4'-octyloxybiphenyl (8 OCB), or 4-heptyloxyphenyl 4-nonyloxybenzoate. The physico-chemical properties for compounds 1-n are compared with the corresponding 4-alkoxybenzoate derivatives (compounds 2-n) and 4-alkoxybiphenyl-4'-carboxylate ones (compounds 3-n). These results are discussed in terms of molecular structures and the electrostatic natures of the molecules.

    The present invention provide a liquid crystalline polyester that can be used in production of a molded article having sufficient mechanical strengths in which the melted liquid crystalline polyester has sufficient fluidity in thin-walled portions when the thin-walled molded article is manufactured, and to provide a method for producing the liquid crystalline polyester. A liquid crystalline polyester obtained by copolymerizing 4-acyloxybenzoic acids (I) and 2-acyloxy-6-naphthoic acids (II) in the presence of an imidazole (V) can be used in production of a molded article in which the melted liquid crystalline polyester has sufficient fluidity in thin-walled portions when the thin-walled molded article is manufactured, and which has sufficient mechanical strengths as well, thereby completing the present invention. Further, a liquid crystalline polyester obtained by copolymerizing 4-acyloxybenzoic acids (I), 2-acyloxy-6-naphthoic acids (II), 4,4′-diacyloxybiphenyls (III) and phthalic acids (IV) in the presence of an imidazole (V) can be used in production of a molded article in which the melted liquid crystalline polyester has sufficient fluidity in thin-walled portions when the thin-walled molded article is manufactured, and which has sufficient mechanical strengths as well, thereby completing the present invention.

    A new series of mesogenic compounds having a naphthalene moiety has been synthesized by esterification of 4-(5-(alkyllthio)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenol and 6-alkoxy-2-naphthoic acid and their liquid crystalline properties have been studied. All the members of the series are enantiotropic and exhibit smectic as well as nematic mesophase. The plot of transition temperatures versus number of carbon atoms in the alkoxy chain exhibits no odd even effect and falling tendency for isotropic transition temperatures. High anisotropy, linearity confers rich mesomorphic properties on the system.
