Synthesis of 5-Arylmethylene-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones and β-Aryl-α-keto Carboxylic Acids 2-Trichloromethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one (1) in silylation by trimethylsilyl triflate (2) yields 2-trichloromethyl-4-trimethylsiloxy-5-trimethylsilyl -1,3-dioxole (3). The cyclic ketene acetal 3 is converted to the title dioxolanones 6 in reaction with aromatic aldehydes catalyzed by 2. Hydrolysis of dioxolanones 6 affords arylpyruvic acids 7.
