    The present invention relates to metathesis syntheses for insect sex-attractant pheromones or their components, such as E-5-decenyl acetate, the major component of the Peach Twig Borer pheromone; (5R, 6S)-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide, the mosquito oviposition attractant pheromone; E9, Z11-hexadecadienal, the pecan nut casebearer moth pheromone; 9-tetradecenyl formate, an analog of the Diamondback Moth (DBM) pheromone; 11-tetradecenyl acetate, the Omnivorous Leafroller (OLR) pheromone; E-4-tridecenyl acetate, the major component of the Tomato Pinworm (TPW) pheromone; E,E-8,10-dodecadienol, the Codling Moth (CM) pheromone. The syntheses preferably employ a Class I-IV metathesis catalyst, entail few reaction steps, use generally commercially available starting materials, and have relatively short process times. These syntheses produce good yields without the need for expensive or sophisticated equipment. The invention also provides an inexpensive route for producing omega-haloalkenols by cross-metathesizing alpha-omega-diacetoxy alkenes and alpha-omega-dihalides to yield omega-haloalkenols, which are easily converted into omega-haloalkanols under traditional hydrogenation methods.

    This invention provides metal complexes being useful as catalyst components in metathesis reactions and in reactions involving the transfer of an atom or group to an ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated compound or another reactive substrate and, with respect to a sub-class thereof, for the polymerisation of α-olefins and optionally conjugated dienes, with high activity at moderate tempera-tures. It also provides methods for obtaining polymers with very narrow molecular weight distribution by means of a living reaction. It also provides methods for making said metal complexes and novel intermediates involved in such methods. It further provides derivatives of said metal complexes which are suitable for covalent bonding to a carrier, the product of such covalent bonding being useful as a supported catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic reactions. It also provides a direct one-step synthesis of pyrrole, furan and thiophene compounds from diallyl compounds.

    Compounds having one of the general formulae:    wherein: M is a metal; Z is selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulphur, NR"" and PR""; R", R"' and R"" are each a radical independently selected from hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, C3-8 cycloalkyl, aryl and heteroaryl, or R" and R"' together form an aryl or heteroaryl radical, each said radical being optionally substituted; R' is either as defined for R", R"' and R"" when included in a compound having the general formula (IA) or, when included in a compound having the general formula (IB), is selected from hydrogen, C1-6 alkylene and C3-8 cycloalkylene, the said alkylene and cycloalkylene group being optionally substituted; R1 is a constraint steric hindrance group having a pKa of at least about 15; R2 is an anionic ligand; R3 and R4 are each hydrogen or a radical selected from, among others, C1-20 alkyl, C1-20 alkenyl; R3 and R4 together may form a fused aromatic ring system, and y represents the number of sp2 carbon atoms between M and the carbon atom bearing R3 and R4 and is an integer from 0 to 3 inclusive are useful as catalysts for olefin metathesis and atom transfer radical polymerization.
