  Peptides useful as inhibitors or substrates of thrombin are of the formula wherein X is H, CH3 or an N-protecting group; Y is [CH2]n-Q or where Q is H, amino, amidino, imidazole, guanidino or isothioureido and n is 1-5, preferably 3-5, or Y is nitrophenyl, cyanophenyl, aminophenyl, pyridyl or the side chain of His, or is C3-C9 alkyl or C5-C10 aryl or alkylaryl optionally substituted by up to three groups selected from hydroxy and C1-C4 alkoxy, Z typically a boronate or phosphonate group, for example a boron joined to the residue of a diol, Aa1 is D-Phe or selected from certain unnatural hydrophobic amino acids, and Aa2 is Pro or certain Pro analogues.
