Substitution reactions are used to integrate the electron-rich diboron unit B2(hpp)2 (hpp=1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidinate (red color) in donor-acceptor cyclophanes and paddlewheel-type structures, and to synthesize new cationic unsymmetrically-substituted diboranes.
