We herein describe a chiral diboron-templated highly diastereoselective and enantioselective reductive coupling of isoquinolines that provided expedited access to a series of chiral substituted bisisoquinolines in good yields and excellent ee’s under mild conditions. A simple method for the C-4alkylation of isoquinolines is described using benzoic acid as a nucleophilic reagent and vinyl ketones as an electrophile. There is provided a resist underlayer film forming composition for lithography for forming a resist underlayer film capable of being used as a hardmask.
