The reaction of mercury(II) trifluoroacetate with disilenes (3) and (4a,b) in tetrahydrofuran at 25 °C produces 1,2-bis(trifluoroacetoxy)disilanes (5) and (6a,b); below –15 °C, n.m.r. spectra indicate that an intermediate is formed, for which structures (7) and (8a,b) are proposed.
CYCLOADDITION OF STABLE DISILENES TO TERMINAL ACETYLENES

Tetramesityldisilene and trans-1,2-di-t-butyl-1,2-dimesityldisilene (3) react with various 1-alkynes to give air-stable disilacyclobutenes. The cycloaddition of 3 to alkynes produces equal amounts of both stereoisomers, consistent with a stepwise mechanism.
Formation of a disiloxirane in the oxidation of 1,2-dimesityl-1,2-di-t-butyldisilaethylene

Reaction of trans-1,2-di-t-butyl-1,2-dimesityldisilaethylene in solution with dioxygen at –78 °C produces the disiloxirane (7) and a compound believed to be the 1,2-disiladioxetane (8a); the latter compound rearranges quantitatively to the known 1,3-cyclodisiloxane (5) above 0 °C.
Photo-induced fragmentation of tri-t-butyl-trimesityl- cyclotrisilanes and E,Z-interconversion of di-t-butyl-dimesityl-disilenes

The stereochemical course of the titled photo-conversion to yield Z-and E-substituted disilenes and the photochemical and thermal interconversion of the latter two compounds are described.

The X-ray crystal structures of two isomeric cyclotrisilanes, cis–cis-and cis–trans-1,2,3-tri-t-butyl-1,2,3-trimesitylcyclotrisilanes (1a) and (1b), respectively, have been determined; the structure of (1b) reveals that one Si–Si bond is significantly longer than the other two in agreement with the recently reported chelotropy of photo-cleavage of (1b) to give E-and Z-1,2-di-t-butyl-1,2-dimesityldisilenes
