    The synthesis and characterization of the unsymmetric hafnium dialkyl [1-(eta(5)-9-fluorenyl)-2-(eta(5)-1-indenyl) ethane]HfCl2 (2) and corresponding dimethyl complex [1-(eta(5)-9-fluorenyl)-2-(eta(5)-1-indenyl)ethane]Hf(CH3)(2) (3) is described. The dialkyl hafnocene (3) crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1)/c (No. 14) with a = 9.458(8), b = 8.541(8), c = 23.733(11) Angstrom, beta = 93.16(5)deg., V = 1914(3) Angstrom(3) Z = 4. Further on, complex 3 was activated with methylaluminium-oxane (MAO) and utilized as a catalyst in ethene polymerization.

    Two general synthetic routes for the preparation of ethylene-bridged ansa-zirconocene dichlorides rac-[1-(eta5-Cp1)-1-R1-2-(eta5-Cp2)-2-R2-C2H2]ZrCl2 (6a-c) bearing different cyclopentadienyl fragments [Cp1,Cp2 = Cp (cyclopentadienyl), Ind (indenyl), Flu (fluorenyl)] and a variable bridge substitution pattern (R1, R2= H, Ph) are described, using chiral epoxides as starting materials. Diastereomeric complexes were separated by crystallization. The solid-state structures of two representative examples are reported. In combination with methylalumoxane (MAO), rac-[1-(eta5-9-fluorenyl)-2-(eta5-1-indenyl)ethane]ZrCl2 (6a), carrying no bulky bridge substituent, and the diastereomeric systems rac-[1-(eta5-9-fluorenyl)-1(R,S)-phenyl-2-(eta5-1(R,S)-indenyl)ethane]ZrCl2 (6b1 = RR,SS; 6b2 = RS,SR), showing different bridge conformations, were used for propene polymerization. The stereoselectivity depends on monomer concentration for all three unsymmetric catalysts. Under comparable conditions 6a and 6b1,2 produce polypropenes with significantly different stereoregularities. This demonstrates the importance of a defined bridge conformation for the design of highly stereoselective catalysts.

    A propylene polymeric composition with elastic character that is soluble in at least one nonpolar organic solvent selected from the group consisting of toluene, xylene, heptane, and hexane, comprises greater than 3 weight percent and up to 45 weight percent homotactic sequences each having only r or m diads, all of which homotactic sequences have a helical length in the range of 20 to 150 Å, and in the range of 55 to 97 weight percent of the sum of homotactic sequences of less than 20 Å in helical length, each homotactic sequence having only r or m diads and having fewer than 10 repeat units with mmmm pentads being present in the range of 0 to 35 weight percent of the total composition, and heterotactic sequences having r and m diads of unequal number, the polymer having a molecular weight (M w ) of at least 70,000.
