A stable dimethyl(thiodimethyl)sulfonium tetrafluoroborate salt was employed for the electrophilic cyclization reaction of o-alkynyl thioanisoles for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted benzo[b]thiophenes. The reaction described herein works well with various substituted alkynes in excellent yields, and a valuable thiomethyl group was introduced with ease. The reaction of 2-lithiated benzo[b]thiophene with 8 equiv of elemental sulfur was found to give pentathiepino[6,7-b]benzo[d]thiophene. Benzothiophene derivatives were synthesized in high yields from readily available o-(alkynyllithio)aryllithio compounds, sulfur, and 2 equiv of acid chlorides or other electrophiles. Benzo[b]thiophene was successfully converted to 2-(benzo[b]thieno[2,3-d]-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-benzo[b]thieno[2,3-6]-1,3-dithiole (BT-TTF). Charge transfer complexes of BT-TTF with TCNQ, I-3 and SbCl6 were synthesised and their conductivities 0.4, 0.12 and 0.024 sigma /scm(-1) respectively, were measured as compressed power pellets.
