A methylenation–cyclization reaction, employing cyclic enaminones with primary aromatic amines and two molecules of CO2, furnishing fused-tetrahydropyrimidines, is discussed. New substituted barbituricacidderivatives containing a 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindole moiety have been synthesized by three-component condensation. Luminescence of crystals and solutions of the compounds synthesized have been studied; a maximum luminescence intensity and a minimum Stokes shift have been found in the 1-naphthyl derivative.

A improved and efficient procedure for the synthesis of pyrrolo[2,3,4‐kl]acridin‐1‐one derivatives via the reaction of isatin and enaminone catalyzed by ceric ammonium nitrate under ultrasonic condition has been developed. Compared with the conventional methods, the remarkable advantages of this method are mild reaction conditions, operational simplicity, higher yield, and shorter reaction times.
