Abstract Calix[n]arenes 1 - 3 (n = 4, 6 and 8) were alkylated with alkyl chlorides in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride in chloroform by Friedel-Craftsreaction to give p-alkylcalix[n]arenes 5 - 7 (n = 4, 6 and 8) in good to excellent yields.

An improved method for synthesis of bis(spirodienone) derivative of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene has been developed by mildly oxidizing the latter with I2 and PEG 200 as a phase-transfer catalyst; the resulting compound containing two cyclohexadienone rings at distal positions (1, 3) is formed in quantitative yield.

the production of calix[8]arenes in concentrated reaction masses is described. Obtained purities are >98% and yields of >80%, with isolation by simple filtration. The developed approach allows for subsequent "in situ" formation of calix[4]arenes. The syntheses are amenable to large scale manufacturing. Kinetic observations during the formation of calix[4]arenes from calix[8]arenes are included. Furthermore
