Highly enantioselective intermolecular bromoesterification of alkenes was achieved for the first time. Both C–O and C–Br bonds were introduced enantioselectively in this olefin addition reaction. The sulfonamide NH directing group is important for both the reactivity and enantioselectivity.

A new dibromination reaction involving the combination of dibromomalonate as the bromonium source and a titanium bromide species as the bromide source has been developed. Enantioselective catalysis has been achieved through apparent ligand acceleration by a tartaric acid-derived diol.

Different types of alkenes are applicable, and both enantiomers of the bromohydrin products were obtained in generally excellent yields and enantioselectivities. In addition, an example of enantioconvergentsynthesisfrom the two isomeric products is presented.
