The presumed (cyano)phosphate anion reacts with a variety of aryl aldehydes to yield phosphate ester-protected, unsymmetrical benzoins in good to excellent yields. The unsymmetrical benzoin product can be obtained after deprotection of the phosphate ester with an aqueous amine solution.
