光稳定剂几乎不吸收能导致塑料老化的紫外光,从而避免塑料老化。这类物质通过有效捕集由紫外光引起的游离基来阻止塑料老化的连锁反应发生。目前最常用的光稳定剂是受阻胺,其作用机制如下:在氧气的作用下生成N—O游离基,并与塑料自身产生的游离基结合,防止塑料老化。

根据作用机理的不同,常用的光稳定剂可分为五类:紫外线吸收剂(如水杨酸酯类)、“先驱型”紫外线吸收剂(如苯甲酸酯类)、“消光效应剂”(主要是镍螯合物类)、游离基捕捉剂(主要是受阻胺类)和光屏蔽剂(主要包括炭黑、二氧化钛和氧化锌等颜料)。

建筑外墙涂料直接受到紫外线照射和其他因素侵蚀时,容易因光老化而导致物理性能降低。向涂料中添加光稳定剂可以延缓或抑制这种光老化的进程,提高涂膜耐候性,延长涂料的有效使用期限,这对外墙建筑涂料尤为重要。

不同类型的树脂在紫外线照射下表现出不同的光老化程度。例如,丙烯酸酯树脂类和聚氨酯类的耐光老化性能较好,而氯化橡胶、聚醋酸乙烯、聚氯乙烯和过氯乙烯等则较差,在用作外墙涂料时应尽量避免使用这类树脂。

常用的光稳定剂可分为紫外线吸收剂、紫外线猝灭剂和紫外光屏蔽剂三类。紫外线吸收剂能选择性地强烈吸收紫外线并将其转化为热能或次级辐射(荧光),从而保护材料免受破坏,如邻羟基二苯甲酮类、水杨酸酯类和邻羟基苯并三唑类等。

紫外线猝灭剂不直接吸收紫外线,而是通过在光化学反应发生前转移聚合物中受照射激发分子的能量,使其回到稳定状态,从而避免聚合物老化。常用的猝灭剂包括有机镍化合物。

光屏蔽剂能够吸收、散射和反射紫外线,在涂料中的各类颜料(如氧化锌、氧化铁、氧化铬、炭黑和酞菁系列的颜料)都能起到这一作用。
