Abstract The 13C and 1H NMR spectra of rifabutin 1 and five of its derivatives 2–6, three of which are described for the first time, were assigned using 2D homo- and heteronuclear correlation NMR spectroscopy, proton exchange with deuterium, and selective proton decoupling methods to one bond and long distance. The study was also extended to the other well-known ansamycin antibiotics, rifamycin S 7

This invention relates to new derivatives of rifabutine of general formula I, wherein R1 is hydrogen or COR2 in which R2 is independently selected from saturated or insaturated linear, branched or cyclic alkyl C1-C20; R3 is oxygen or hydroxyl; R4 is a nitrogen atom or N-oxide, and their acceptable salts and solvates, including hydrates. These derivatives are useful as anti-infectious agents, namely against Mycobacterium avium, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. (I)
