Disclosed herein are peptide derivatives of the formula A-B-D-CH.sub.2 CHCH.sub.2 C(O)R.sup.1 }C(O)-NHCHCR.sup.2 (R.sup.3)COOH}C(O)-E wherein A is a terminal group, for example an optionally substituted phenylalkanoyl, and B is a N-methyl amino acid residue; or A and B together form a saturated or unsaturated alkylaminocarbonyl; D is an amino acid residue; R.sup.1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, a monosubstituted or a disubstituted amino; R.sup.2 is hydrogen or alkyl and R.sup.3 is alkyl, or R.sup.2 is hydrogen and R.sup.3 is phenylalkyl, or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are joined to form a cycloalkyl; and E is a terminal unit, for example, an alkylamino or a monovalent amino acid radical such as NHCH(alkyl)C(O)OH. The derivatives are useful for treating herpes infections.

Novel ampholytic ter-polymers comprising at least an ethylenically unsaturated cationic monomer, a monomer containing a carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid group and diallyamine or derivative are claimed. Further, the ter-polymers may be used in personal care or personal washing compositions optionally in the presence of conditioning agents such as silicone, fatty amines, fatty amine oxides and fatty quaternaries and/or various benefit agents. The ter-polymer compositions are especially useful in the treatment of keratin-containing substrates. Keratin substrates include, but are not limited to, animal and human hair, skin and nails.

Provided are a copolymer of a diallylamine and sulfur dioxide having a high molecular weight and a low content amount of impurities such as halogens, and a production method with which it is possible to produce such a copolymer relatively simply and at low cost. This problem is solved by: a copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 150,000 or higher and a degree of polymerization of 1000 or higher determined by GPC measurement, the copolymer being obtained by copolymerizing sulfur dioxide and a sulfonic acid salt or alkyl sulfate salt of a diallylamine having a specific structure; and a method for producing a copolymer, the method having a step for copolymerizing sulfur dioxide and a sulfonic acid salt or alkyl sulfate salt of a diallylamine having a specific structure in ethylene glycol or in propylene glycol monomethyl ether.
