Lower-rim mono- and diacylated calix[4]arenes [acyl = C6H5CO, 3,5-(NO2)(2)C6H3CO] undergo selective adamantylation with 3-Y-1-adamantanols (Y = H, i-Pr, 4-MeC6H4) in trifluoroacetic acid at the free phenolic fragments of the macroring. The reaction provides a convenient preparative route to di-, tri-, and tetraadamantylated calix[4]arenes.

A new preparative method for N-adamantylation of carboxylic acid amides, ureas and for C5-adamantylation of barbituric acid in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is proposed. Tertiary 1-adamantanols and 1-(1-adamantyl)alkanols were used as adamantylating agents. The reaction of 1-(1-adamantyl)alkanols with nitriles in TFA solution was employed for the first time for the preparation of N-[1-(1-adamantyl)alkyl]amides.

It is shown for the first time that unsubstituted p-H-calix[4]arene can be selectively adamantylated at the upper rim by reaction with functionally substituted 1-hydroxyadamantanes in trifluoroaceticacid medium.
