N-alkyl, N-hydroxylalkyl and N-alkanoyl derivatives of 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-L-arabinitol are disclosed in which the alkyl group has from 4 to about 9 carbon atoms, the hydroxyalkyl group has from 2 to about 5 carbon atoms and the alkanoyl group has from 3 to about 12 carbon atoms. These compounds are useful intermediates for the preparation of acylated derivatives thereof which have antiviral activity.
Novel N-aryl derivatives of 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-L-arabinitol and their acylated derivatives are disclosed. These compounds have useful antiviral activity.

The present invention provides methods of treatment and prevention of early cardiac and early cardiovascular diseases, for instance of ischemic origin, such as left ventricular hypertrophy, coronary artery disease, essential hypertension, acute hypertensive emergency, cardiomyopathy, heart insufficiency, exercise tolerance, chronic heart failure, arrhythmia, cardiac dysrhythmia, syncopy, arteriosclerosis, mild chronic heart failure, angina pectoris, cardiac bypass reocclusion, intermittent claudication (arteriosclerosis oblitterens), diastolic dysfunction and systolic dysfunction, as well as improving the success of heart transplantations, through administration of glycogen phosphorylase inhibitor compounds.
Acylated derivatives of 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-L-arabinitol and their N-alkyl and N-hydroxyalkyl derivatives in which all the free hydroxyl groups are acylated with acyl groups having from one to six carbon atoms and in which the N-alkyl substituents in the N-alkyl and N-hydroxyalkyl derivatives contain from one to fourteen carbon atoms are disclosed.

Novel antiviral compounds are disclosed having the following formula
wherein R₁ is C₁-C₁₄ alkyl or C₁-C₁₄ hydroxyalkyl or C₃-C₁₂ alkanoyl or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical having six to ten carbon atoms; and
wherein R₂, R₃ and R₄ are the same or different and each is H or acyl having one to six carbon atoms; provided, however, that when R₂, R₃ and R₄ are each H, then R₁ is C₄-C₉ alkyl or C₂-C₅ hydroxyalkyl or C₃-C₁₂ alkanoyl.
