Ultra-violet irradiation of 1-dehydro-2-formyl-testosterone acetate (1) in dioxane leads to a complex mixture containing the salicylic aldehyde derivative 2 as the major component. Traces of 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-17β-acetoxy-Δ1;3,5,10-estratriene have also been isolated. Acid-catalysed dienone-phenol rearrangement of 1 yields a phenol (6) of the same structure type as the major photoproduct 2.

UV.-irradiation of O-acetyl-1-dehydro-testosterone in dioxane solution yields a mixture of photo-isomers from which four phenolic and five ketonic components have been isolated.
