    Synthesis, Characterization, and Electro-Optic Properties of Novel Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal with a Large Tilt Angle and Wide Temperature Range of Chiral Smectic C Phase

    The present article is a study of the ferroelectric behavior in low-molar-mass organosiloxane liquid-crystal materials classed. A few novel compounds with large tilt angle and wide temperature range of the SmC* phase have been synthesized, and the mesophases exhibited by them have been compared. The mesophases under discussion were investigated by means of polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, as well as electro-optical experiments. The influence of the molecular structure on the occurrence of the SmC* phase was investigated. Finally, the electro-optical properties of the SmC* phase, such as tilt angle, dielectric permittivity, and switching behavior, were also measured. As a consequence, the correlation between their electro-optical properties and chemical structures of these compounds is investigated.

    A liquid-crystalline polymer comprising the repeating units of the general formula (I) in which : k is an integer from 1 to 30 ; and R1 is where : X is -COO-or -OCO-: and R2 is -COOR3, OCOR3, or -OR3 where : R3 is R4 and R5 being each independently -CH3, a halogen radical, or -CN, m and n being each independently an integer from 0 to 10 with the proviso that n is not 0 when R4 is -CH3, p being 0 or 1, and C marked with being an asymmetric carbon atom. The polymers of the present invention exhibit a ferroelectricity even at temperatures around room temperature and as well have such a high speed of response to external factors that they can be used for displaying motion pictures, and the polymers may also be advantageously used as display elements for large displays or curved displays.

  • Shear Deformation and Ferroelectricity in Chiral SmC* Main-chain Elastomers

    Ferroelectric smectic main-chain liquid crystalline elastomers were synthesized and subjected to simple shear deformation to achieve reorientation of the layer structure and the formation of a macroscopic spontaneous polarization. The phase behavior and structural parameters of these elastomers are investigated and discussed. A shear-induced splitting of the X-ray scattering intensity distribution is found. A splitting of the sample in domains of two director orientations that couple differently to the shear deformation is proposed. The smectic layers also move at different affinities depending on their initial orientation. The smectic layer spacing was found to be nearly constant even though the smectic tilt angle changes significantly. The realignment of the smectic layers indicates a migration process, where depending on their original orientation the layer normals are leaving or entering the X-ray scattering plane. The spontaneous polarization was found lobe linearly dependent on the dopant concentration with Ps = 30 nC/cm(2) for a system doped with 11 wt % of chiral dopant.
