Aryl-substituted alpha,beta-difluoroallyl alcohols 1 were readily hydrolyzed in the presence of a catalytic amount of montmorillonite K 10 (clay) in hexane at reflux temperature for 1 h to give the corresponding (Z)-alpha-fluoro-beta-aryl-substituted acrylaldehydes 2 in good yields. Optically active 1,1,2-trifluoro- or 1,2-difluoroallylic alcohols were prepared via a lipase-catalyzed reaction and their absoluteconfiguration was determined by an X-ray crystallographic analysis of the corresponding ferrocene ester along with the refined Mosher method (the Kusumi–Ohtani method).
