Functionalized tetraarylphthalimides or diarylphthalimides fused with an acenaphthene moiety have been prepared in one step from 2-bromomaleimide and tetraarylcyclopentadienones (tetracyclones) or 7,9-diaryl-8H-cyclopentacenaphthylene-8-ones (acecyclones). The reaction, involving a cycloaddition-decarbonylation-dehydrobromination sequence, gives high isolated yields and is compatible with the presence of various functional groups.

Heptaaryldipyrromethenes are efficiently prepared from ammonium acetate and tetraarylcyclopentadienones in a one-pot cascade process and can be converted into heptaaryl BODIPYs with fluorescent response to environmental acidity.

The oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of electron-poor arenes was achieved using DDQ-CF(3)SO(3)H resulting in hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes with electron withdrawing Br, F and CF(3) groups. This method will lead to their expansion into a new class of electron transport materials.
