The use of 3,7,9,9-tetrasubstituted 3-phenylsulfonyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane compounds for treating cardiac arrhytmias in larger mammals, including humans; novel antiarrhythmically active 3,7,9,9-tetrasubstituted compounds corresponding to the general formula Ia ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms or a cycloalkylalkyl group having 4-7 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is lower alkyl, and R.sup.3 is lower alkyl, or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together form an alkylene chain having 3-6 carbon atoms, R.sup.4' is cyano, an R.sup.6 --O--CO-- group in which R.sup.6 is lower alkyl, an R.sup.7 --SO.sub.2 --NH-- group in which R.sup.7 is lower alkyl, or an R.sup.8 --CO--NH-- group in which R.sup.8 is lower alkyl or a phenyl group which is optionally substituted by halogen, cyano, nitro, or an R.sup.9 --SO.sub.2 -- radical in which R.sup.9 is lower alkyl, or an imidazolyl radical located in position 4 of the phenyl ring, and R.sup.5 is hydrogen or halogen, and physiologically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, and processes and intermediates for preparing them.
