5′-Phosphatidylnucleosides Spontaneously Assemble to Form Circular and Linear Helical Strands

Phospholipid-nucleoside conjugates containing two long alkyl chains and a nucleotidyl residue have been synthesized and their self-organization and morphology have been investigated. 5′-Phosphatidylcytidine and 5′-phosphatidyldeoxycytidine spontaneously assembled to form circular and linear strands. Image processing analysis of the electron micrograph of the strands confirmed that they are indeed double helix reminiscent of the double-helical structure of nucleic acids.
