  A high-purity bromine compound which is useful as flame retardant, can be obtained industrially advantageously by a process comprising reacting bromine with an aliphatically unsaturated compound of formula (1) :         R1-O-Ar1-Y-Ar2-O-R2     (1) to produce a bromine compound of formula (2):         R3-O-Ar1-Y-Ar2-O-R4     (2) wherein in each formula Ar1 and Ar2 are independently a C5-16 aromatic hydrocarbon or a C5-12 saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon, and Y is a C1-6 saturated hydrocarbon, a sulfone, sulfide, ketone or C2-6 alkylene oxide or is a single bond; R1 and R2 are each independently a C2-11 hydrocarbon group which is at least partially unsaturated; and R3 and R4 are groups obtained by saturating with a bromine atom the unsaturated groups of R1 and R2 respectively, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent which is inactive in the reaction, and a substantial amount (e.g. 80% or more) of reaction heat is removed from the reaction system by the vaporization heat of the solvent or bromine.

  A method for purifying a bromine compound of formula (1): in which Ar1 and Ar2 are each independently a C6-10 aromatic hydrocarbon group; Y is a C1-2 alkylene group, a single bond, sulfone group or ketone group; R1 and R2 are each independently a C2-5 hydrocarbon group; m and n are each independently an integer of 1 to 4; p and q are each independently 2 or 4;    by depositing the bromine compound as solid particles from a crude solution containing the bromine compound wherein (i) the crude solution is supplied into a slurry containing the particles of the bromine compound; (ii) the concentration of the particles of the bromine compound in the slurry is maintained at 10 to 50 wt%; (iii) the solvent contained in the slurry is a mixed solvent of a good solvent and a poor solvent for the bromine compound and the solubility of the bromine compound in the mixed solvent is maintained at 0.1 to 5 g/100 g of solvent; and (iv) the solid particles of the bromine compound are separated from the slurry.
