    ABSTRACT There is provided a process for producing an aminomethyl group-containing benzamide compound represented by the general formula (II):wherein -CONH2 and -X represent a substituent on the benzene ring and -CONH2 exists at the meta- or para-position of -CH2NH2, and X and n are as defined below, which comprises hydrating an aminomethyl group-containing benzonitrile compound represented by the general formula (I):wherein -CN and -X represent a substituent on the benzene ring and -CN exists at the meta- or para-position of -CH2NH2, X represents a chlorine atom or a fluorine atom, and n represents an integer of 0 to 4, provided that, when n is 2 or more, X may be the same or different.

A method for producing a fluorinated benzenedimethanol compound according to the present invention comprises the steps of reducing the nitrile groups of a fluorinated benzenedinitrile compound to obtain a fluorinated xylylenediamine compound and then converting the aminomethyl groups of the fluorinated xylylenediamine compound into hydroxymethyl groups.

    A process for the hydrogenation of perhalogenated terephthalonitriles to their corresponding amines under acid conditions. The process is suitably conducted under a pressure of 1 to 100 atmospheres and at a temperature of from 0 to 200°C in the presence of (i) a hydrogenation catalyst containing 0.1 to 70% by weight of a metal in Group 8 of the Periodic Table, (ii) an inorganic acid in an amount at least chemically equivalent to the amine formed and (iii) a solvent which is inert to the reaction ingredients and which does not poison the catalyst; the concentration of nitrile in the total reaction mixture being from 3 to 25% by weight. Preferably water is present in such amount that the proportion of water to solvent is from 1:50 to 1:1 parts by weight. The diamines obtained by this process are useful intermediates in the preparation of pesticidal compounds. 2,3,5,6-Tetrafluoroxylylene diamine and its salts are novel compounds.

    A process for producing a cyanobenzoic acid compound, a cyanobenzamide compound, an alkyl cyanobenzoate compound, and a cyanobenzoyl chloride compound, which are useful intermediates for a variety of chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, liquid crystals, and monomers for functional polymers. One nitrile group of an easily available phthalonitrile compound is selectively hydrolyzed to thereby produce a cyanobenzamide compound with high selectivity and yield. The cyanobenzamide compound thus-produced is transformed under acidic conditions into a cyanobenzoic acid compound and a cyanobenzoate ester compound without the cyano group of the benzene ring being damaged.
