    Herein, we describe the synthesis and resulting activity of a complex series of alpha-aminophosphonate diaryl esters as irreversible human neutrophil elastase inhibitors and their selectivity preference for human neutrophil elastase over several other serine proteases such as porcine pancreatic elastase, trypsin, and chymotrypsin. We synthesized and examined the inhibitory potency of several new simple Cbz-protected alpha-aminoalkylphosphonate diaryl esters that yielded several new HNE inhibitors, where one of the obtained compounds Cbz-Val(P)(OC6H4-4-COOMe)(2) displayed an apparent second-order inhibition value at 33,015 M (1) s (1).   • Latent mercaptans as multi-functional additives for halogen-containing polymer compositions

    Halogen-containing polymer compositions comprising a latent mercaptan-containing heat stabilizer composition substantially free from the offensive odor typically associated with mercaptans are protected during processing by the degradation products of the latent (i.e., blocked) mercaptan which include a free mercaptan. Other products of the degradation are believed to include carbocations of the blocking moiety which are stabilized by a molecular structure in which the electron deficiency is shared by several groups. The latent mercaptan may be the sole heat stabilizer additive but the free mercaptan released during processing may also synergize the activity of metal-based heat stabilizers such as metal salts and organometallic stabilizers such as organotin carboxylates and mercaptides in the polymer composition. The odor of primary mercaptan-containing heat stabilizers in halogenated polymer compositions is masked by a small amount of a latent mercaptan. The latent mercaptans also serve as intermediates in the preparation of anti-oxidants, anti-microbial agents, photostabilizers, and primary heat stabilizers. Highly effective heat stabilizers are prepared by the condensation of formaldehyde and a para-phenol and further condensation of the crude product with a mercapto-containing compound.

    A process of producing aldehydes in a continuous hydroformylation process of continuously reacting an olefinic unsaturated compound with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium-phosphite based complex catalyst and continuously separating at least one component from a reaction product, the process being characterized in that at least a part of an aldehyde product and water are taken out as a mixed vapor flow from a catalyst-existent region in the process, and at least a part thereof is fed outside the catalyst-existent region as it stands as the vapor or as a condensate after cooling, to reduce the water concentration within the catalyst-existent region, whereby decomposition of phosphite ligands in the hydroformylation process of olefins is suppressed.
