  Compounds having the formula R is R1 is or R2 is halogen, nitro or various organic groups; R3 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or methoxy; R4 is halogen, nitro, methyl, alkoxy, carboxylic ester or methylthio; W is Cl, Br or OR12, where R12 is various organic groups; X is CH3 or OCH3; Y is CH3, alkoxy or substituted alkoxy; Z is N or CH; O is CH2 or O; and A is CH3 or CH3O ; and their agricultrally acceptable salts, exhibit herbicidal activity. Some may have utility as plant growth modifiers. For these uses the compounds may be formulated into compositions in conventional manner. The compounds can be prepared e.g. from the corresponding sulfonylurea by reaction with Ph3P and CCl4, or CBr4 to obtain a compound (I) wherein W is Cl or Br, and optionally reacting this product with an alkali metal alkoxide to obtain a compound wherein W is OR12.
