The mechanisms of the photochemical reactions of triphenylgermane and 1-naphthylpitenylmethylgermane in solution were studied, by measurement of the transient absorption spectra of their triplet states and germyl radicals. The rate constant for the chlorine abstraction reaction by each radical with CCl4 was determined to be (6.6 ± 1.0) × 108 s−1 mol−1 dm3 at 28.5°C.

The UV photolysis of bis(triaryl-substituted germyl)platinum complexes, Pt(Ar 3 Ge) 2 (PMe 2 Ph) 2 (Ar = Ph, p-C 6 H 4 -SiMe 3 , and p-C 6 H 4 C(CH 3 ) 3 ) in THF at room temperature results in Ge-Pt bonds homolysis to give the corresponding germyl radicals.

DIRECT OBSERVATION OF GERMYL RADICALS BY A LASER-PHOTOLYSIS OF GERMYL KETONES
Photochemical primary processes of benzoyltriphenylgermane and benzoylphenyldimethylgermane were studied at room temperature in cyclohexane and chloroform. The germyl radicals generated were observed directly with the aid of a laser-photolysis technique.
