    To investigate the formation process of high carbon number (>C32) sedimentary porphyrins, heating experiments of several porphyrins were performed. Chromic acid oxidation of the heating products of protoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester afforded 2-methyl-3-n-propylmaleimide as the predominant product among the side-chain extension products formed. On the other hand, saturated substituents of etioporphyrin were also extended on heating to slowly form normal and branched homologs. These results may suggest that the transalkylation of porphyrin side chains proceeds mainly by a regioselective mechanism involving alkyl radical addition to a vinyl group of chlorophylls or their diagenetic products.

    A process for the preparation of a (co)polymer containing at least one unit derived from a citraconimide by curing curable composition comprising at least one substituted or unsubstituted citraconimide and a sufficient amount of an anionic curing catalyst to convert at least 10% of the citraconic alkyl groups on the citraconimide units to alkylene bridges; at a temperature above the melting point of the citraconimide unit and the product of that curing process, are disclosed. The invention also relates to the cured oligomers and articles of manufacture embodying them. These novel, cured oligomers are thermoplastic and offer several advantageous properties.

    A resin composition for an optical material, which is excellent in heat resistance and transparency and is soluble in an aqueous alkali solution, a resin film for an optical material made of the resin composition, and an optical waveguide using the same are provided. The resin composition for an optical material includes: (A) an alkali-soluble (meth)acrylate polymer containing a maleimide skeleton in a main chain; (B) a polymerizable compound; and (C) a polymerization initiator. The resin film for an optical material is made of the resin composition for an optical material. The optical waveguide has a core part and/or a clad layer formed using the resin composition for an optical material or the resin film for an optical material.

    Novel substituted azole diones are provided that kill cells, suppress cell proliferation, suppress cell growth, abrogate the cell cycle G2 checkpoint and/or cause adaptation to G2 cell cycle arrest. Methods of making and using the invention compounds are provided. The invention provides substituted azole diones to treat cell proliferation disorders. The invention includes the use of substituted azole diones to selectively kill or suppress cancer cells without additional anti-cancer treatment. The invention includes the use of cell cycle G2-checkpoint-abrogating substituted azole diones to selectively sensitize cancer cells to DNA damaging reagents, treatments and/or other types of anti-cancer reagents.
