Fluorescent squaramides as anion receptors and transmembrane anion transporters

A series of squaramide-based anion transporters functionalised with the 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore has been developed for improved ionophoric activity and fluorescent imaging in cells.
Hemin was identified as a broad-spectrum (400–700 nm) and highly efficient (quenching efficiency >97 %) darkquencher for designing “turn-on” fluorescentprobes. Based on this initial discovery, the first live cell-applicable fluorescentprobe of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) was disclosed and a convenient fluoroassay was developed for determining HO-1 activity in biological samples.
