    Provided is a compound which thickens or gels a fluid organic material to a desired viscosity, or which uniformly stabilizes the formulation of a composition containing the fluid organic material. The compound according to the present invention is represented by Formula (1): R 1 —(CONH—R 2 ) n (1) where R 1 represents an n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon group containing two or more benzene rings; R 2 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 6 or more carbon atoms; and n represents an integer of 4 or more. The group R 1 is preferably a group corresponding to an aromatic hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of benzophenone, biphenyl, and naphthalene, except for removing hydrogen atoms in a number of n from the aromatic hydrocarbon. A thickening/stabilizing agent according to the present invention includes the compound.

The invention further relates to a process for the preparation of dimer or multimer forms of BAPO compounds of the formula (I) and of dimer or multimer forms of MAPO compounds of the formula (II), characterized in the (n + m) equivalents of a dimetalated-phosphine R1P(M)2 is reacted with one equivalent of a di-or polycarboxylic acid halogenide to form an intermediate of the formula III the intermediate is then reacted either with (n + m) equivalents of a further carboxylic acid halogenide (R2-CO-Hal) or with a halogenide R3-Hal, the reaction products are then oxidized to form phosphine oxides of the formula I or II.

    Blends of siloxane copolymers, notably siloxane polyimides, with polyaryl esters or polyaryl ester carbonates containing linkages derived from resorcinol, show improved flame resistance, as measured by two minute and peak heat release, compared to conventional polycarbonates. In some instances transparent flame retardant blends can also be prepared. The compositions show good melt processability, high impact strength and high elongation, and can be used to make various flame retardant articles including sheets and films.
