A metal-free radical cascade methylation/cyclization of a wide range of N -alkyl- N -methacryloylbenzamides by using dicumylperoxide as the methylating reagent provides a convenient access to a series of methylated isoquinoline-1,3-diones in moderate yields.

Two cascadecoupling reactions were developed between N-alkyl(aryl)-N-methacryloyl benzamides and readily available benzyl alcohols or sodium benzenesulfinates. Through a radical cyclization strategy, these one-pot sequential reactions provided two simple and efficient approaches to the synthesis of a variety of isoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-dione derivatives in high yields with a broad substrate scope.

An efficient Pd(0)-catalyzed alkylarylation of N-alkyl-N-methacryloylbenzamides with alkyl iodides for the synthesis of isoquinoline-1,3-diones is described. A highlight of the method is its excellent functional-group tolerance. Mechanistic investigations suggest that a radical addition/cyclization process is probably involved in the sequences.
